Online certifications blew up and they were an incredible opportunity to land jobs without having to spend a bunch of money on college degrees or a boot camp, but then AI showed up and many of these online certifications are now not as good as they used to be. However, there’s still a bunch of videos online that will tell you that all of them are good. Most of these videos will never tell you what actually happens after you finish, what employers think, or whether employers actually hire people. So here are the top five online certifications that are still worth it post-AI, based on real data and real outcomes. A lot of these certs are still good, but plenty of them will just sit on your resume and do nothing.

We’re talking about certificates and certifications in this post, and I’ll mention a few that pair well with each other along the way.

5. Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate

Number five on the list is the Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate. These certifications include nine courses, fully online, with no prior experience needed. It covers network security, Linux, SQL, Python, SIEM tools, and intrusion detection. Google says you can complete it in 6 months at under 7 hours a week.

The cert that secretly doubles your credentials

Here’s something that separates this from most certs on this list: Google built it to directly prepare you for the CompTIA Security+ exam, considered a gold-standard, industry-leading certificationsfor cybersecurity roles. Finish both and you walk away with a dual credential. The Google Cybersecurity Certificate is basically preparation for CompTIA Security+.

What employers actually want (and most courses hide from you)

The job market behind this is real, and the projected growth for technology and cybersecurity related jobs over the next 10 years is significant. According to Glassdoor, cybersecurity analysts reportedly make around $101,000 to $168,000 a year. But let’s talk honestly, because entry-level cybersecurity roles are competitive. Employers want to see that you can actually do the work, not just that you finished a course. Use this cert to build a foundation, pair it with hands-on labs and personal projects, then pursue Security+ if landing a job is the actual goal.The cert points you in the right direction, but you have to walk the rest of the way yourself.

Google actually added two new AI-related sections to this cert. These professional certifications started as a response to colleges and other educational paths not preparing people with the right skills for the job market, and Google is staying on top of that by teaching people what employers want to see when it comes to AI. This one is still excellent, and cybersecurity in general remains valuable.

Why this field is surprisingly AI-proof

Cybersecurity is also one of those fields that’s generally safer when it comes to job security in your own country, since companies tend to prefer hiring people based in the same country for security reasons, which makes it harder to outsource these roles. There are other reasons too, but this one still earns its spot on the list.

4. Google Project Management Certificate

Number four is the Google Project Management Certificate. This one is seven courses, fully online and flexible, walking you through the foundations of project management, initiation, planning, execution, agile, and a real-world capstone project. It’s officially listed at 6 months, but most people finish in one to two months. Like most Google certs, the official estimate tends to run longer than what people report finishing it in, usually anywhere from a couple of weeks up to about 3 months if you’re working a full-time job and chipping away at it gradually. Every course in this program is rated 4.8 stars or above.

The cert that government agencies quietly endorsed

Here’s something worth noting: the National Association of State Workforce Agencies, which represents all 50 states, has partnered with Google to distribute these certificates through state workforce programs across the country. That’s a big deal. It’s essentially the government working with Google to point people toward the exact skills they want them to have to be employable.

The honest truth about this cert most reviewers skip

Why did I rank it here? Because of what the community actually says after finishing it: treat it as proof of foundational knowledge, not a standalone qualification. It’s a bridge, not a destination. According to Glassdoor, project managers reportedly make around $80,000 to $138,000 a year. If you’re already in an operational role and want to move into project management, this is an affordable way to start building the language and framework, then chase more advanced credentials once you’ve got the experience behind you. Use it right and it’s worth it; expect it to do everything alone and you’ll be let down.

Leading other people is always going to be a valuable skill, AI or not. As a project manager, you’re leading a group to complete a project on time and on budget, which is a skill that holds up regardless of automation. This one is relatively AI-proof in my opinion, and with this cert as well as the others on this list, I’d recommend embracing AI rather than avoiding it. The natural next step after this one is the CAPM, and further down the road, the PMP. But this is a solid place to start and a low-risk way to see if you actually like the field before diving in headfirst.

3. Google IT Support Professional Certificate

Number three is the Google IT Support Professional Certificate, the OG. This was the very first professional certificate Google and Coursera ever collaborated on, and likely the first professional certificate of its kind in general.This one targets a very specific person: someone with zero IT experience, who isn’t even sure if it’s the right path, and wants a low-risk, affordable way to find out before committing to harder certifications.

It covers hardware, operating systems, networking, security, and technical customer support, and it’s self-paced and fully online. According to Glassdoor, a lot of IT careers pay well even at entry level.

The hidden cert that actually unlocks better job odds

If getting hired in IT is the goal, the CompTIA A+ is what employers are actually asking for. The Google cert is a starting point, a way to test if this field is right for you before you go deeper, and it can help you work toward the CompTIA A+ as well. That said, plenty of people have reported landing IT jobs with just the Google IT Support Certificate. It gives you a puncher’s chance at landing the job, but if you want much better odds, especially as a total beginner, pair it with the CompTIA A+.

2. IBM Data Science Professional Certificate

IBM’s secret weapon most beginners overlook

It’s not all Google certs here. The IBM Data Science Professional Certificate covers Python, SQL, data visualization, Jupyter notebooks, and machine learning fundamentals. One of the biggest names in tech backs it, and it’s open to complete beginners—no prior coding or computer science background required—and you can complete it on your own schedule in less than 6 months (though I’d expect this one to take a bit longer than some others on this list).. According to ZipRecruiter, the median pay for a data scientist is reportedly around $57 an hour.

Here’s where IBM has a real edge over some of the other certs available: Google recently updated its cert to include Python, which is a good sign, but check the current curriculum before you enroll since these programs update frequently. Community comparisons tend to describe IBM as more technically deep and traditional, while Google is seen as more modern and user-friendly. Both are strong, but IBM tends to go a bit deeper, so getting both isn’t a bad idea.

1. Google Data Analytics Certificate

The most talked-about cert of 2026 (and its buried flaw)

This one gets talked about constantly, and for good reason, though a lot gets left out of the conversation. It covers data cleaning, analysis, visualization, SQL, spreadsheets, Tableau, and R programming. It’s beginner level with no prior experience needed. Officially it’s listed as 6 months at 10 hours a week, but it can be finished much faster. One reviewer who completed the whole thing said it took them 80 to 100 total hours.

Coursera‘s page has cited over 270,000 open data analytics jobs in the US. You might be thinking that number predates AI, and the job market has shifted somewhat since, but the program has added two modules on integrating AI into data analytics, which helps make you more competitive on the job market.

The module that makes this cert dangerous on the job market

Data analysts reportedly make around $72,000 to $122,000 a year, and Google reports that 75% of completers say the cert helped their career within 6 months. These numbers matter, but here’s what most videos don’t tell you: the SQL, Tableau, and R content is surface level. It gives you the foundation, but not job-ready depth. There’s another gap worth knowing too: this cert teaches R, not Python, and uses Tableau, not Power BI, which can be a problem for a lot of jobs out there. In current job postings, Python reportedly appears in about 33% of data analyst listings, while R shows up in only about 20%.

The blueprint for turning any cert into actual job offers

Treat it as a foundation. Finish it, then go deeper on SQL and Python on your own, or pair it with a cert like IBM’s. The cert gives you the vocabulary, but the extra work afterward gets you the job. Build a genuinely good portfolio and resume using the skills you’ve learned to make something unique. A good approach is reaching out to a local business, maybe one your family owns or one nearby, and doing a project for them for free, then adding that to your portfolio and resume.
